OCULAR COMPLICATIONS CAUSED BY Cryptococcus gattii AFLP4/VGI MENINGITIS IN AN IMMUNOCOMPETENT HOST

چکیده
The Cryptococcus gattii complex has been recognized as an endemic pathogen since the 1990s and has caused multiple outbreaks since then. Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is a globally occurring invasive mycosis associated with significant morbidity and mortality, including papilledema and visual loss. We present a case of CM caused by C. gattii sensu stricto (AFLP4/VGI) that was complicated by visual loss under the continuation of antifungal therapy (AFT).

Regional pattern of the molecular types of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii in Brazil.
The molecular types of 443 Brazilian isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii were analyzed to determine their geographic distribution within Brazil and their underlying host conditions. The following data, imported from previous epidemiological studies as well as two culture collections, were analyzed for: place of isolation, source (clinical or environmental), host risk fac...

Cryptococcal meningitis is caused by the yeast Cryptococcus neoformans. Two varieties are recognized: var. gattii and var. neoformans. It is usually associated with immunosuppressive states, particularly HIV infection. Cryptococcal infection of the central nervous system is uncommon in immunocompetent children and difficult to diagnose. Ocular complications are common. Optic disc swelling was f...
متن کاملMeningitis secondary to Cryptococcus gattii, an emerging pathogen affecting immunocompetent hosts
BACKGROUND Meningitis continues to be one of the most important infections diagnosed and treated by emergency physicians. Despite the advent of anti-infective therapy, meningitis carries a mortality rate of 20%-40%. In this study, we describe the first reported emergency medicine case of meningitis associated with Cryptococcus gattii to alert providers of this insidious, emerging global pathoge...
متن کاملCryptococcus gattii infection causing fulminant intracranial hypertension.
Cryptococcus neoformans variety gattii (C. gattii) causes infection in predominantly immunocompetent individuals. The majority of cases present with headache due to meningitis and its natural history normally follows an indolent course. We report a fatal case of fulminant cryptococcaemia culminating in severe intracranial hypertension due to C. gattii. Such cases of fulminant disease are rare a...
متن کاملAnti-Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor Autoantibodies Are a Risk Factor for Central Nervous System Infection by Cryptococcus gattii in Otherwise Immunocompetent Patients
Cryptococcosis is caused by either Cryptococcus neoformans or C. gattii. While cryptococcal meningoencephalitis is caused mostly by C. neoformans in immunocompromised patients, the risk factors remain unclear for patients with no known immune defect. Recently, anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) autoantibodies were detected in the plasma of seven "immunocompetent" cry...
